We received an e-mail, the morning of May 16th from Hank O'Connell letting us know that  former Skokie Officer, Mort Podolsky

 passed away on May 15th.

Mort was on the job from July 1959 - August 1969

Ron Baran spoke with Mort's widow Polly, who said Mort had passed after a severe flare-up of his lung trouble.  There will not be a service but there will be a memorial at a later date.

If anyone would like to pay tribute,

a small donation in his name to a pet rescue or humane society would honor him.

If any of you old timers wish to send condolences you can do so at:  Paintyou@cfl.rr.com

Class act Mort Podolsky was quick with one-liners

Simply put, Morton A. "Mort" Podolsky was funny. But not because he was always telling jokes. Rather, his witty responses, often one-liners, were what made him a class act.

"The man made me laugh all my life," said his wife of 40 years, Polly Podolsky. "He always wanted to be the best show in town, and he always was."

Podolsky died of emphysema May 15. He was 74.

As a teenager in Chicago, Podolsky lived a block away from Senn High School. Despite that, he drove his 1936 Ford with no fenders to school every day, just to be cool. "It was a $50 jalopy," Polly Podolsky said. "A real beater."

Daily Herald Obituary for Renee

September 25, 2008
Ron:
Perhaps you will remember my sister, Renee Custis; she was a dispatcher for the SPD during the late 70s and early 80s.  She died last evening of lung cancer, which had metastasized to her brain.  Her diagnosis came only in July, so fortunately she was not sick for a very long time.  Would you be so kind as to send this out in an email?  There are some people who have asked me about her when we have come to the lunches.  Information can be found in the Tribune and in the Daily Herald both Thursday and Friday.  Thanks so much.
